Post 6: My chosen track

It was important I decided a fitting and appropriate song for my music video. It had to fit into the pop genre, have a strong beat I could choreograph dance moves to and create an exciting music video to.

MY SONG
I decided to pick 'Tik Tok' by Kesha:

'Tik Tok' is Kesha's debut single by American singer Kesha and was released in August 2009. The song was co-written with its producers Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. The song achieved great success by topping the charts in eleven countries. In the United States, the song broke the record for the biggest single-week sum of all time for a female artist selling 610,000 digital downloads in one week.

Dr. Luke, the producer of the song was in need of expanding his writing and producing credits, asking different people in the industry for demos from unknown artists. Two of the demos he received were from Katy Perry and Kesha. Kesha's demo made her stand out from other artists that Luke had listened to. Following this, at the age of eighteen, Kesha signed to Luke's label, Kemosabe Records, and his publishing company, Prescription Songs.

Kesha said the inspiration behind the song came from coming home after a night out of partying. She  then wrote down a few words to a song and the following morning, had an urge to put the song together. Kesha said "I thought it was just another song, I thought it was just like all the other ones I'd written. I didn't even know if it was very good. I wanted to rewrite the verses, I didn't think it was funny or clever. I thought it kind of sucked. But everyone else liked it." followed by "We can find clothes on the side of the street and go out and look fantastic, and kill it. If we don't have a car that doesn't stop us, because we'll take the bus. If we can't afford drinks, we'll bring a bottle in our purse. It's just about not letting anything bring you down.

"Tik Tok" is a a pop song, however it is also an upbeat dance/electro-pop song that incorporates the sound of '80s video game noises in its production, to earn a unique bitpop beat, a subgenre of electronic music. Kesha uses a spoken word rap style on the verses while the chorus is sung Kesha uses a rap vocal delivery.
In July 2009, the song was offered as a free download on Kesha's MySpace page for over a month before its official release. The song was later released to iTunes on August 7, 2009.
The song's marketing relied heavily on radio once she had achieved a strong online presence, but its radio release was delayed until October in order to gradually grow the online social media's interest in her. The song achieved great success by topping the charts in eleven countries.

OLD IDEAS
I was originally going to choose 'Skater Boi' by Avril Lavigne. However, despite the songs fun energy, the song had too much of a rock influence and wasn't easy to dance to. This wouldn't be wise to pick in regards to sticking to the requirement of the brief, having a 'Pop' song.

NEW IDEAS
I really liked 'Tik Tok' because of the high level of energy it has throughout as well as a more slowed down, heart-felt hook towards the end. This gives a good contrast in the types of shots I can include and could help mark a strong, pivotal point in my narrative.
Even though the song is about partying on a literal level, I thought it would be very interesting to create my own narrative on top. I could potentially create an immediate juxtaposition between the lyrics and moving image. E.g the lyrics say 'Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy, Grab my glasses, I'm out the door; I'm gonna hit this city" - here, I could be getting ready for work in a formal outfit and then build the rest of my narrative from this with my star persona escaping her stifling job and living the life she wants to lead "I ain't coming back".
